What the Rail Is Costing You
A trolley opener works by pulling a carriage along a rail. The rail runs from the header above the door to a mount at the back of the garage, dead centre, and the motor head hangs off the far end of it. It is a good design and it has been sold that way for decades, because in a garage that only ever holds a car the ceiling is dead space anyway.
In a shop it is not dead space. It is the last space you have.
The rail itself sits low enough that a ceiling rack cannot pass under it and cannot be positioned over it. The motor head is worse, because it hangs several inches further down at exactly the point where most people want a hoist or a light. What you are left with is two narrow strips of ceiling either side of a no go corridor.
What a Jackshaft Does Instead
A wall mount opener, usually called a jackshaft, bolts to the wall next to the torsion shaft and turns that shaft directly. The door goes up because the springs and drums do what they always did, only now a motor is winding the shaft instead of a carriage dragging the top section.
Nothing crosses the ceiling. The full run between the two tracks becomes available, from the header to the back wall.
What You Get Back, Realistically
The honest figures matter here, because the marketing overstates it.
- The rail is only a few inches deep, so the raw vertical gain over the rail line is small.
- The real gain is horizontal. A continuous four foot deep rack across the centre becomes possible where before you had two eighteen inch strips.
- Over the parking position, you get back the motor head depth, which is what usually blocks a hoist point.
- On a standard height garage, removing the rail is often the difference that lets a two post lift raise a car fully.
What Has to Be True First
A jackshaft drives the torsion shaft, so the door needs torsion springs, not extension springs down the sides. Extension spring doors need converting to torsion first, which is a separate job and worth doing on its own merits in a shop anyway.
The door also has to be balanced. Lift it halfway by hand with the opener disconnected. It should stay roughly where you put it. If it drops or runs up, the springs are wrong for the door, and a wall mount unit fitted to that will strain and trip its cable tension monitor. We sort the balance before we quote the conversion.
Headroom above the door needs checking too, since the unit sits beside the shaft and needs clearance to one side.
The Visit
- Test the door balance by hand and check the spring turns.
- Confirm side room and header clearance for the unit.
- Remove the old rail, carriage and motor head, and make good the ceiling mount.
- Fit the jackshaft to the shaft with its own mounting bracket, squared to the wall.
- Fit the cable tension monitor, which is what stops the unit driving a door whose cable has gone slack.
- Set the travel limits and force settings.
- Run the safety reversal tests required under UL 325, both the photo eye and the contact reverse.
- Confirm the battery backup works. California has required it on new residential openers since July 2019 under SB-969, and it is the part people forget to test.
When Not to Bother
If your ceiling is high enough that the rail was never in the way, keep the opener you have. A working trolley unit is not worth replacing for its own sake, and we will tell you so on the phone before we drive out.
