A Door Specified for a Car, Used in a Shop
Builder grade garage doors are specified for a predictable life. Two or three cycles a day, nothing touching the panels, nothing hotter than a warm afternoon anywhere near them. The hinges, the rollers and the panel gauge all follow from that assumption.
Put a workshop in the same room and every one of those assumptions breaks. The door gets cycled six or eight times a day. Sheet goods get carried past it. Something on wheels finds the bottom section. Sparks land on the paint.
None of that means you need a commercial door. It means the hardware wants upgrading in three or four specific places, and the door wants protecting in one or two more.
Struts Where the Panels Flex
A wide door on a thin steel panel flexes in the middle as it comes over the curve of the track. In a normal garage that flex is cosmetic for years. On a door being cycled several times a day it works the panel until the skin creases, usually along the top edge of a section.
A steel strut bolted across the back of the section stops that. It is a cheap part fitted in an hour, and it is the single most useful upgrade on a door in a shop.
Hinges and Rollers Rated for the Cycles
Standard hinges are thin gauge and the roller stems run in a plain hole. More cycles means more wear at that hole, and an elongated hinge hole lets the roller wander in the track, which is how a door starts binding.
Heavier gauge hinges cost a few dollars more each. Nylon rollers on sealed bearings run quieter and last longer than the steel ones that came on the door, which also matters if you are working under it.
Protecting the Bottom Section
The bottom panel takes almost all the damage in a shop, because it is the part at knee and handlebar height when the door is shut.
- A rub rail, which is a length of angle or timber fixed to the wall either side, so a dolly stops before the panel does.
- Bollards, where something heavy is regularly wheeled in and out along the same line.
- A steel kick plate on the inside face of the bottom section, on doors that keep taking the same hit.
- A welding screen or blanket between the grinder and the door. Sparks pit paint, and pitted paint on a steel door in Long Beach corrodes fast, because the salt in the marine layer finds every break in the coating.
Setting a Real Vent Position
Everyone with a shop garage ends up wanting the door partly open. Fumes from finishing, dust the collector does not catch, or just the heat.
The usual method is a stick or a block. That is worth being blunt about: the springs are then holding an in between position with nothing captive, the opener is not in control of the door, and a knock to the prop drops it. It also defeats the entrapment protection required under UL 325, since the photo eye beam is well below where anyone is now working.
Done properly you either set a vent position on the opener where the unit supports one, or fit a partial open lock that captures the door at a fixed height. Either way the door is genuinely held, and it goes back to the same position every time so you are not guessing.
Replacing One Section
Where the bottom panel is already crushed or corroded through, a single section can usually be swapped rather than the whole door. It depends on the manufacturer still listing that model and profile, so the first thing we ask for is a photo of the label inside the end stile.
After any section swap the door weight changes slightly, so the balance gets tested and the springs adjusted if needed. That is part of the job.
What This Is Not
This is not a sales route to a new door. If your existing door is sound and the hardware is the weak point, upgrading the hardware is a fraction of the cost and we will say so.
